When I really wanted to propel my career years ago I realized that there was something missing. Most of my career has been in sales so I had a powerful hunger not to lose anything. Not to lose any moment. Not to lose any prospective client. I considered sales my personal business, in which I could chart my success and my income.
In the hectic nature of day-to-day stuff, I did lose. I remember the client like it was yesterday. My appointment was at ten in the morning. I could let you fill in the story. five minutes impacted not only that sale but the partnership(s) that could have come from it. I did not take a previous note to schedule the appointment (no electronics back then, just stone carvings). I tried to remember it in my head which led to a comedy of frantic behavior that morning.
I became hardcore about not missing anything, anyone, anywhere. Over time I will share very personal tactics, but the foundation of it was taking super awesome notes! The secret is that following up on Notes will help to ensure that you never miss anything. I have evolved from the Franklin Covey notes tool (which I still adore) to awesome tools like One Note and Evernote. These have become so ubiquitous that they can be on every device at all times (like your phone, tablet). Some versions of One Note you can write with, but if you want an awesome handwriting tool, check out Notes Plus!
The key here is to succeed, get stuff out of your head and in your notes. The most important task for each following day will become following up on your notes!
I will be going into detail about going to C.A.M.P in upcoming posts but I wanted to lay down the foundation. We all wear many hats and the goal of this concept is to look at the output of our day. Did we accomplish what we set out to do in a way we can visibly see? The hope is that we create value not only for others but also for us personally.
C=Create. The concept here is simple. Creating something new that falls beyond the framework of what is expected each day. If you are salesperson, it may mean calling an extra client that is cold to create the beginning of a relationship. If one is in operations, what is a problem that no one has thought of that could provide value? Keep a log of your creativity each day and you will be impressed with what you begin to think about.
A=Attack. With all those hats we wear, it is easy to get pulled in a myriad of directions by competing forces. What is the primary focus today? If you accomplished it, you know that you can come back to the other things at another time. Once the Attack focus has been identified, using as much effort to accomplish it as possible will create a genuine sense of completion. We are all guilty of trying to get a ton done each day, and sometimes it happens. This will help to put all the other tasks in the proper perspective.
M=Maintain. We all want to build something or be part of something that is growing. What is something that you or your organization has created, that needs daily attention? An example would be a sales pipeline or a server. Think about your day like you are the center of the universe with goal of maintaining the stars within it so it can continue to grow the planets and galaxies.
P=Partner. Every day gives us a unique opportunity to partner with others. Many of us are knowledge workers and so the more we share and partner, the more our world grows. If we don't set aside time each day to partner with people, we are not imparting our knowledge and potentially lessening our value. The old day of keeping complex knowledge to oneself is over. Be an open-source of info. Share freely with everyone.
Think about your calendar in way where you bucket your activity into these areas. If you find that you have nothing in your calendar that links to any of these, it could be a hectic calendar, or okay in the short-term. You want to have as much influence in your world as possible and thinking of these four dimensions can have a powerful impact on creating the world you wish regardless of your role today. It can also position your personal value to others in a way that will make your contributions memorable.
I will delving in more detail on the "C" in the next piece, but begin to think about what you have created and what you can create starting right now!
CREATE AND CONSUME AND CREATE A CYCLE OF DOPENESS"
