BlacKkKlansman, Super Loser, and Charlottesville.  What a day.

8/11/2018

This is one year removed from the premiere of “Super Loser”. It is also two months before our next showing. More importanly it is one year after Charlottesville. I went to see Spike Lee’s latest movie and it just dawned on me that they all had the same anniversary. i walked out of the movie affected but not in the way you might think.
I felt desensitized to the ending and on some level to the message. The movie is a masterpiece of cinema and probably the best movie I have seen this year. I felt the way I did because there has been so much on this topic in my lifetime. It seems like progress on race relations is glacial, My view has two perspectives. First I find it crazy that we hurt each other for so long. I am sick and tired of us as humans doing this. I am becoming resigned to the fact that it may in our nature. If we believe everyone and everything on this Earth was created by God, why would we harm anything? We are the only life that we know in the universe and possibly the only we will ever know. Secondly, I find myself opposed and hypocritical to my own opinion. I struggle with this deeply. I get mad just like most everyone when someone is hurt (that word again) because of their ethnicity or this blasted facsimile of a culture. The movie helped to create a clear visual about how deep the divide really is. One scene a character summed it up the best when he used the word “fear”. We do all of this hurt because of that one emotion. All of this labeling is a direct result of fear.
The fear is getting bigger in my view. The people in the movie feared many things from “Archie Bunker” to violence, to being replaced. Today we fear all of that and more. Technology, people, and the environment are all serious items in our world. I am getting closer to understanding why people segregate themselves. The tribalism is a comfort zone. As an aside, I have hugged more different people at a Jets victory (for obvious reasons) than any other environment. Our tribe is fifiy years of ineptitude. The reason I love this movie is the same reason I love theater. I hate entertainment that gives all the answers. I despise when everything is giving to me in a bow. This movie will force anyone that sees it to talk about it, which is the best kind of Cinema.

WIT Score: A

Pros: Cinematic gold. Nice performances
Cons: Scared me for a minute that things would wrap neatly. And then...
Overall: As much as I loved Infinity War, my favorite of 2018.m
