Create your own damn box!
When I first came across “productivity” as my thing, I didn’t want to believe it. It didn’t sound sexy or glamorous like acting or writing. I’ve read most of the books about the topic and they were not flashy and some weren’t even compelling. I acquired and read them because I wanted to get the “Winston” things done. The world can try and pull us in many directions. We experience it almost moment by moment when we think of emails, texts, notifications, work, customers, family, friends, governments, and ourselves. Inside of each one of those items, there is specificity and nuance that can go deep. We just can’t put them in one bucket or box. For example if you just think of “family” what comes to mind? For many of us it can mean significant other(s), children, siblings, parents, and more. You get the point. I personally came to the realization that I want to get to the “self actualization” point in Maslow’s hierarchy. Last year was a harrowing year for me with my Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. By the grace of God, I'm feeling like myself these days. The added elements of living in a place and time ( i.e. U.S. and NOW ) where it's possible contributes to this powerful inner drive which most of us feel daily.
I have worked deeply to find the pull for me. Don’t get me wrong I love sharing ( and speaking to a greater extent ) tips on how to maximize an app on a phone, but I’ve lived my life by making things bigger than what I currently know. An example was a few years ago when I decided to write, direct, market, produce, cast, create the music, and appreciate a stage play. That was big enough to fire off my neurons and energize the synapses of my brain. The result was that I hoped that I helped many people directly and indirectly by putting that all together. I learned new skills, soft and hard to accomplish this milestone. My love of productivity will be taking a similar path. What is something you want to do that is big? Find something bigger than your current internal capacity and grab it! Some of us are comfortable and may not wish to have the “Growth Mindset” that Carol Dweck shares in her book “Mindset.” I find this most prevalent in people in my age group. Many of us are “riding” it out and love our current circumstances.
If you are willing to venture beyond your box ( or boxes ), there is no age or skill barrier. It’s just a commitment opportunity. For me, I’ve decided how to take my love of “how” I do things to another level. In my typical way, I have Kanban boards, Vision mapping, and Operational elements to assist it all in coming together. It has to be “BIG” enough to get my attention. I am so thrilled to share it with everyone in the coming weeks and months. Once you find out what you love, create something big enough for you to bust out and create your own damn box!
